Geoffrey gives Jay an acting lesson

Acting 101

It is true. Dogs and other animals don't shout, they whisper and you have to be listening and 'in-tune'.

I was out cross-country skiing today with Geoffrey my dog. I like to exercise as I plan my classes and I was preparing for a class on the theme 'expression'. As an actor we use movement and sound to convey mood. So does my dog Geoffrey. He is a master at it.

He took off on his own, ahead of me and disappeared. I called him several times. No Geoffrey. He is a pack animal. He knows when he is breaking a rule. Whatever is tempting him takes precedent over the pack rule. He knows the difference between right and wrong, but he is still a child and bends the rules to discover the true boundaries:)

He eventually came. I did not offer him a reward. I was not angry or noisy. Simply no reward other than a soft, short 'good dog'.

We skied a little further on and I decided to test him. 'Here Geoffrey. Geoffery come.'

Coming master!

He arrives but rather than coming right up to me he spends the longest time coming closer, circling, coming closer and so on. I keep calling 'Geoffrey come' until he is at my side. I reward him with a treat and several "good boy' s. I can see he is pleased. While he wasn't afraid of me, I never scared him, he could sense that I was not pleased the first time when he ran away and so this time he was hesitant, wanting to do the right thing but not sure how I would react.

He is an excellent actor. I can see the internal conflict. All of his attention is focused on this inner conflict and it's affect on me.

Stop working us so hard teacher

The Monday evening child drama class and teen drama program have begun and while I can't speak for the participants I know I am having a great time!

Theatre is not something you can study alone on your own. You need others to work with. Others who offer challenges, interplay and encouragement.

In the child drama program we get to work improvising scenes that are sometimes non-human. We get to explore the fantasy world and an imaginative world free from the cynicism that comes with age.

In our first teen class we played status games, and learned about the power of our own egos.

I'll try to post updates as we go. Looking forward to class # 2. Gotta get back to work and design that class now...

Winterfest was FUN!

The puppets can't believe what a great audience the Winterfest kids were! It was cold (not too cold) and noisy (helicopters and a midway). But in spite of all this, they participated fully and enjoyed themselves. At Pandora's Sox, we learned something today. This show works anywhere. We had tons of fun.

After Pandora's Box-The Puppet Show, Pandora and Prometheus did some solo work. Pandora told a litany of Knock-Knock jokes and Prometheus got to test out his "Who's On First" routine; both hugely successful.

We can't wait to do another event like this!

What I see when I dream at night

I am soooooo looking forward to this!

I will be teaching "Acting For Teens" at the Melody in Me Studio beginning Monday February 6. I am particularly excited about this class because teenagers have so much energy and enthusiasm for sharing stories and performing!

When I teach teen drama courses, I like to design the program as we go. The lessons, exercises and topics come from the questions and interests of the students taking the class.

Yes there are "scales" to practice as in any art form, but we must remember to explore and have fun.

The challenge for me, as the instructor, is to make sure the students learn without realizing they are learning. Nobody wants to give up their Monday nights only to find out the drama program is like being in school.

Often in school people take drama because they think (and bad teaching has made this so) it is a "bird" course. In fact the opposite is true. Drama is not for the birds so to speak. To make a living at it you have to work very hard, harder than most professions, because we, particularly in North America, place very little value on the performing arts.

A mental health program for older adults

Welcome to Pandora's Sox. We're not in the habit of taking this company on a team building exercise. We don't spend a great deal of time with the puppets discussing our vision, mandate, objectives, strategies, threats, weaknesses, opportunities, strengths...well you get the picture.

And yet when I reflect on the activities this company has engaged in so far, I'm proud to say, Pandora's Sox has a soul. Always this artistic expression is steeped in social benefit. This newest venture, Pandora's Tour of Hope is no exception.

What started out as an experiment, bringing a positive health message to adults, has become a do-it-yourself mental health program; an activity program no different than the walking group, the swimming program, arts and crafts and other activities designed to improve the quality of life for the older adult.

Awakening

The misconception is that Pandora's Tour of Hope is a puppet show for seniors. Pandora's Tour of Hope is a mental health program delivered to older adults using the medium of puppetry.

Pandora's Tour of Hope, is a three phase program. Phase one is the introduction. A performance of the puppet show "Pandora's Tour of Hope" introduces the audience to the idea of breath awareness (mindful meditation, similar to the program "mindfulness") . This 20 minute performance incorporates a breath exercise as part of the audience participation segment. The question and answer, following the performance reinforces the message about the power of breath on the state of mind. In addition, phase one introduces puppetry to older adults. The performance itself is entertaining, fun, different, and the audience is warmed to the feeling puppets give us.

"Let me tell you about it."

Phase two is a performance of the show "Prometheus". The puppet Prometheus is a friendly, wise, retired actor who has recently been diagnosed with Alzheimer's. His memory (an actor's essential tool) is failing him and he has bouts of confusion. He sometimes gets angry and frustrated or just tired. Prometheus has turned to the teachings of a voice teacher he once had; a voice teacher who introduced him to mindfulness. Prometheus returns to mindfulness as a means of dealing with his anxiety, depression, and frustration. The audience participation segment of this show takes the participant on a 10 minute meditation exercise. Audience members get to experience the sensations breathing mindfully creates. In addition, there is a resource guide that informs the reader how to practice mindful meditation and some tips on forming a mindfulness group at the retirement residence, long term care facility, older adult centre or anyplace where older adults and seniors gather. This program is also relevant to any organization offering programs to mental health clients of any age or symptom.

Phase three is the establishment of your own mindfulness program either formally or informally with reinforcement performances of these puppet shows and utilizing the resources outlined in the guide.

Do you have any experience working with children?

Understandably, I get asked that question a lot, when booking a children's show and it got me to thinking, just what experience have I had? Hmmm let's see...

When I was still a kid myself, I would help my mother teach child drama classes at Galt Little Theatre. In the summer, while in high school I worked as an actor touring summer camps and performing with a company called "The Grand Street Players".

Yup, that's me as the Wizard

University years saw me touring Healthspell, (Ontario Ministry of Health) and The Water Safety Show (Ontario Camping Association). I think we visited just about every elementary school and summer camp in Ontario during those years.

"Showbizkidz" (Gravenhurst) and "ACT UP" (Collingwood) were drama programs that I designed and executed.

I also worked for the MS Society conducting Read-a-thon programs. I toured elementary schools as a company manager with The National Tap Dance Company of Canada, oh, and I have worked as a school photographer with Josten's Photography.

Remember the Mystery Sleuth?

A few years ago I joined Mad Science and conducted science experiments at schools, birthday parties, and fairs and exhibitions. Yes, I can comfortably say I have been a Mad Scientist.

Now I am having the most fun ever with Pandora's Box-the Puppet Show. Oh and I nearly forgot...I am teaching a teen drama program at The Melody In Me Studio here in Barrie...

Try this.

Knock knock jokes are greatbecause there is dialogue (call and answer). You can find lots of knock knockjokes at the library or on the internet. The great thing about knock knockjokes is you only have to remember one word. The rest of the script you alreadyknow!

Create a story board. Draw 4-5pictures that tell the story you want to tell in your puppet show. Thesestories can be well-known (fairy tales) or your favourite story.

Speaking of muscles, puppeteers need strong arms andshoulders, strong fingers, strong voices, and lots of breath.

Exercise your arms, fingers, voice everyday. Play with differentvoices.

In the new year I am going to be teaching drama to teens. From time to time I conduct acting workshops, and more recently puppet workshops.

People are beginning to ask me questions such as "what method of acting do you employ?" and "what can I expect to learn in a puppet workshop?"

Those are good questions. Always glad when students ask me good questions...shows they are listening...

In fact, half the answer is right there. As an actor/puppeteer you need to hone your listening skills.

When asked what “method” I teach when it comes to drama, I like to answer, ‘all-of-them.’

My drama classes are a combination of improvisation, physical storytelling, and vocal flexibility. Talent and enthusiasm are combined with knowledge and skill. The actor learns how to execute, creatively, effectively, clearly and skillfully. I believe the role of a great actor is to bring text to life. The secret to unlocking great performances comes from an actor’s ability to ‘listen’ to a character: the rhythms, noises, and language used by the character. The actor then interprets, and chooses how to convey, this character and situation to the audience within the context of the driving artistic vision of the production. 'Method' also depend on the style of theatre being presented. No sense using “psychological motivations” for actions in a farce!

"And the puppet workshops?" you ask.

Same principle...if you can hear vocal sounds, the musicality of speech, the noises made by the resonators of the human voice, you are well on your way to developing great puppet characters and voices. Now all you have to do is perfect the execution of that voice and character and that is the other half of the equation - practicing your story telling skills through exercising your mind (imagination) your body and your voice!

Be it puppets or characters, the actor must communicate - clearly, and in a manner suitable to the form. That takes practice - exercising voice, mind and body, every day.

Are you still with me?

When I worked in theatre administration we used to joke that "we would kill any ambition a co-op student had about pursuing a future in theatre." If, after the 3 months, they were still enthusiastic, we knew there was no hope and they should stay in the business:)

Classes are always fun. That's because learning is fun. You learn as much about yourself as you do about performing and that's always fun too. Finding out new things about yourself.

Jay Wilson

Fresh out of diapers, Jay was shunted to Betty Wilson’s Saturday morning drama classes at Galt Little Theatre. During his teens, Jay taught child drama and performed at summer camps. After graduating from Waterloo University’s Drama and Theatre Arts program, Jay worked as an actor for a number of Ontario theatre companies before becoming Company Manager with the National Tap Dance Co. of Canada, where Jay confirmed that acting, not dance, would be his calling! Jay has augmented his 30 year professional stage career conducting drama instruction programs for children, teens, adults and older adults as well as enjoying a successful career in arts administration. To date the highlight of Jay’s stage career came this past summer when playwright, Dan Needles, of Wingfield Farm fame, contacted Jay with the opportunity to play a part written expressly for him in Theatre Collingwood’s production of Fair Play!

Jay is the director of Pandora’s Sox, a puppet company that provides entertainment and workshops mainly for seniors. The power of breath on the state of mind is the theme throughout the puppet work of Pandora’s Sox.

It's official. The script for Prometheus is nearing completion and the show is just beginning to go into rehearsal. Prometheus, is a sequel to Pandora's Tour of Hope, offering more of what audiences are asking for. The story follows Prometheus's life in the theatre from 500BC right up through vaudeville and beyond as he explains having to hide from Zeus after stealing fire and giving it to the humans. The name Prometheus means forethought but he's been having trouble lately and in his show he tells of a mystical voice teacher he met who taught him a great deal about breathing and its effects on humans.

Prometheus is best for audiences who have already seen Pandora's Tour of Hope and now want to experience more of this sensation of hope resulting from paying attention to one's own breath. In addition to the extended breathing exercise, in the audience participation portion of the show, there is a particularly amusing rendition of Abbot and Costello's famous "Who's on first?" routine!

From Aeschylus to Shakespeare to Groucho Marx and back again, Prometheus takes you on a theatrical journey and conducts a series of "breathing games" designed to bring comfort to our sometimes harried lives.

Oh my gosh we're busy! There are two upcoming performances of Pandora's Tour of Hope on Tuesday Nov 1 2011. The Waterford Retirement Home @ 11:00am and then Woods Park Home @ 2:30pm.

Over on the other side at the administration office envelopes filled with puppet promotion material concerning the children's show Pandora's Box-The Puppet Show have been whisked off to the post office for delivery, consumption and eventual acceptance of a great show at a great price! Pandora, Prometheus, Epimetheus, Moros and even Zeus himself are all delighted to be given this opportunity to delight the students of Simcoe County schools.

With so much excitement and goings-on, the creative juices must be flowing. Prometheus has just been itching to do a show of his own following the instant success of Pandora's show Tour of Hope.

In fact Prometheus has just shown a rough outline to the producers of Pandora's Sox for his one man show. There is a great deal of buzz about this one. Simply entitled Prometheus the play is a fitting sequel to Pandora's Tour of Hope. In Prometheus, we learn a great deal more about the power of breath on the state of mind as Prometheus reveals where he has been hiding all this time, his love of theatre and the fact that he has an illness. Stay tuned for the release date. Hopefully rehearsals can begin soon!

Pandora's Tour of Hope had its inaugural performance at the Barrington retirement home in Barrie today. Approximately 20 residents of the Barrington witnessed Pandora strut her stuff and judging by the audience comments, Pandora's Tour of Hope is going to be entertaining seniors for a long time to come!

"This is the best thing I've seen since I've moved in here."

"Such a simple, yet important message, and what a fun way to tell it."

"It was too short. When can you come again?" "Bring us your children's show, we can laugh too you know."

Hello "Tour of Hope" fans

Here's some more background about the show...

Pandora’s Tour of Hope is a puppet play with a lesson. Aging is often a stressful process and older adults need effective coping skills to help ease this process. The message is the power of breath, on the state of mind. By observing one’s own breath, one can calm the mind. The medium of puppetry is a very pleasant way to experience this lesson. Creator, Jay Wilson has a long-standing history of successful educational theatre.

Currently this play is being performed in retirement homes. Pandora’s Tour of Hope is a production of Pandora’s Sox, an educational puppet company formed in 2008. Up until now Pandora’s Sox has performed and conducted workshops for children. This is the first product for seniors.

How this project came to be.

I have an extensive background in live professional theatre both as an actor and as an administrator. This project is very reminiscent of a project I did 30 years ago called “Healthspell” a puppet show sponsored by the Ontario Ministry of Health which toured elementary schools and taught healthy living choices. Now that I’m older my focus has shifted to adults.

“Act-Up” and “Showbizkidz” were two child drama programs I created for theatres in Gravenhurst and Collingwood. I was the Company Manager for The National Tap Dance Company of Canada and I am currently a working professional actor as well as Director of this project.

Pandora’s Tour of Hope was written because my half-brother recently moved into a retirement residence not in his hometown. His diagnosis is Alzheimer’s and I thought he would enjoy this show and benefit from its message. I personally am returning to a mindful meditation course as a means of dealing with stress.

TOUR OF HOPE TAKES OFF

There is a buzz about this show already! We are going to Whispering Pines retirement home in Barrie ON on Thursday Oct 20. That should be fun. We've never been there before.

In the new year, yes we're booked for Feb 14 already!, we're going to Belleville for their senior's fair. In addition to entertaining the clientele at the fair with the show Pandora's Tour of Hope, we'll also have a booth and be mingling with the hoy-poloy. I think a puppet parade might be in order. "OH Boy!" says Pandora.

Here are some photographs of the puppets at play. Pandora's Sox performs what we call "Shameless Puppetry". You see both the puppeteer and puppet at play. There isn't a puppet theatre.

Pandora's Tour of Hope is for older adults. The story, if there is one, is somewhat autobiographical as I have recently returned to mindful meditation as a means of dealing with issues that cause stress.

I have a close relative in a retirement home and I thought he would be amused if he had the opportunity to see a show such as this.

What makes this show special is that in addition to using what is considered a child's medium (puppets) to reach seniors, this show truly leaves the audience feeling better after the breathing exercise in the audience participation segment.

This show is 20 minutes long with a 'question and answer' making it a 30 minute segment.

The show, Pandora's Box-The Puppet Show is for all ages. It follows the story of Pandora's Box rather closely. It features 5 characters, original songs, and audience participation. This show has been performed in schools, libraries, community events.

Pandora's Box-The Puppet Show hasn't been to a older adult facility...yet...although as I begin to talk to program directors they seem intrigued by the idea of this show at a retirement home. This is a 25 minute show with a 'question & answer'

Jay was recently praised for his role as Bert McNabb in Fair Play by Dan Needles. "There's a particularly amusing - albeit moving - sonnet by Bert that is very well done and completely entertaining . Jay and Pandora hope to tour senior's residences and activity centers with this lighthearted tale of life.

The story.
Jay has an idea. He wants to gather up the courage to put on a puppet show. Pandora, the puppet, realizes that if she doesn't take charge, this situation could become embarrassing for both of them, especially her!
Partly a history of puppetry, a morality play, a farce and something about mindful meditation. A charming and sweet tale about tolerance and acceptance.

Why it is the Ontario Puppetry Association (hit the link) and if you like puppets, or even better if you DO puppets, (great heavens) you should check them out!

Membership is cheap, cheap, cheap but it is worth every penny. You learn lots about puppets!

Personally, being an actor by trade, I hate puppets. They don't pay any attention to Actors Equity rules! Puppets will work flat out with no breaks.

You can't even work them to death: no such thing.

They work for little or no money and it is 100% tax free since they aren't really citizens. Pandora's Box-The Puppet Show was originally written for 5 actors but I couldn't afford it, so I made 4 of the characters puppets. Well 3 of the characters are puppets, Prometheus, Pandora, and Moros (who comes out of the box). Zeus is played by a mask. (and boy, is Zeus ever ticked about that, being a god and all)

Anyway there are some unemployed actors out there who have been replaced by puppets. Ha, and they thought technology (computers) would take away their jobs!

Pandora's Sox is heading to Collingwood for Canada Day...

The fun begins on Friday July 1st. Starting at 11am, there will be musicians entertaining at various stations in the downtown core. Don’t miss the Citizen Reaffirmation Ceremony and Gigantic Birthday Cake at the Federal building starting at Noon. Everyone is invited to reaffirm his or her Canadian Citizenship, receive a certificate and have a free piece of the birthday cake, which is generously donated by Loblaw Great Food. Elephant Thoughts will be setting up an awesome science tent in front of town hall for children of all ages between 1pm and 3pm. Jay Wilson and his puppet friends will be wandering around Downtown so make sure you say “Hi”! The fun and entertainment continues until 4pm.

Pandora’s Box, said to contain all the evils of the world, is making a rare appearance at the new Bradford West Gwillimbury Public Library, Saturday June 18 at 2pm.

Brothers, Prometheus and Epimetheus will be on hand to protect us from the possibility of Pandora herself opening the box, but Pandora says” don’t count on them keeping a lid on things this time!”

Surprisingly, rumour has it that even mighty Zeus himself may wade into the battle to protect Bradford and its citizens from complete devastation. But don’t bet on it!

Come see for yourself as this ancient myth comes to life in the form of a puppet show.

Pandora’s Sox - The Company

Actor and puppeteer, Jay Wilson performs the 5 character, one man show entitled Pandora’s Box The Puppet Show, featuring original music, large colourful rod puppets, humour and a wacky array of characters filling the hall with laughter and excitement.

Pandora’s Sox is a puppet training company for aspiring puppeteers. The Pandora Sox method uses the essentials of live theatre, a strong voice and physical presence, and then channels those skills into simple everyday sock puppets.

In addition to the training workshops for children and adults, Pandora’s Sox presents puppet shows. Using what Jay has called “shameless puppetry” both puppeteer and puppets interact right before your very eyes, shamelessly!

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, Pandora is going solo (well as solo as a puppet can) with a new show for adults called Pandora's Tour of Hope.

Critics, once they see this production, will rave about its originality, humour and honesty, of all things!

If you see an upcoming announcement concerning a performance of this production, I strongly suggest you take it in and see for yourself what Pandora, is up to with her hopeless, oops, tour of hope.

Asked why she calls it a tour of hope Pandora said, "mind your own business you ninny."

According to the press release the Tour of Hope promises to be an uplifting experience, almost evangelical. The press release doesn't say whether that experience applies to the audience or the performer.

If nothing else it does promise to be silly.

Prometheus was invited to be a special guest on "The Seniors Show" with Barb Richards.

Prometheus, arrived an hour early, just in case, and patiently waited for makeup.

Here is a behind the scene peak at the studio. Funny when on tv it looks like Prometheus is in someone's living room, but you can see here it is just a set. "Kinda like a puppet show" utters Pandora.

"Ya it does look like my living room" says Prometheus,"except for the big freaking cameras and bright lights that are in your face all the time!"

No one works as hard as this guy, Doug Measures. He is a one man technical crew. "I sure don't want to be a producer when I grow up" shouts Prometheus. "NO way"

A good time was had by all. the puppets want to come back and suggest a new show for Rogers - THE PUPPET SHOW! A show about nothing except puppets. "I could be the host and we could discuss issues that are of interest to puppets", says Prometheus. "You know, like, what to do when your eye falls out during a monologue, or how to properly file your income tax, stuff like that."

Geoffrey joins Pandora's Sox

Ladies and gentlemen, girls and boys, please let me introduce to you, the newest addition to Pandora's Sox...presenting...GEOFFREY.

Now Geoffrey is new to touring and meeting new people. In fact he gets very excited when he sees children because he loves to play. Geoffrey isn't quite sure what to think of the puppets. He likes them, so much so that he wants to chew their faces. Anytime we travel Geoffrey rides in the front seat, and the puppets, (and any company Jay has along for the ride)...well, they ride in the back.

Geoffrey will be along for the upcoming puppet workshop, Puppet Secrets at the Collingwood Library, Sat January 29, 2011, 11:00am-12noon.

It was a whirlwind weekend at Wordstock (what alliteration!)

A puppet workshop in the morning...

followed by a performance in the afternoon (unfortunately no photos...yet)

Then bam, off to the hotel for some R&R before the wrap up party. Here we are checked in.

Pandora gets gussied up before the party. "Taking far too long in the bathroom", mutters Prometheus.

But then Prometheus gets his turn and can't stop talking about the dual-head shower massage. "What a way to unwind after a gruelling performance!"

Then off they go to the wrap-up event, only to return to the hotel and enjoy the goody bag contents...

and then settle in for a night of tele in bed. "Oh Prometheus, what station is that? Those muppets are so naughty!"

Pandora and I were out for a stroll the other day when some crazy photographer snapped a photo. A month later a friend sends us a copy of Georgian Life magazine and there is Pandora, on the front cover no less!

The caption is the best part. They said Ray was coming to town. My name is Jay. They said we would be performing at "Wordfest". The name of the event is "Wordstock". And they said the picture was taken on Main Street. There is no Main street in Collingwood. Thankfully Georgian Life doesn't report any news!!

Also over the long weekend Jason Langdon updated his biography. At least someone was working!

I've made a number of puppets for Jay using materials ranging from metal wire and plaster to foam and felt. I'm looking forward to going to Georgian college in Barrie when September rolls around, until then, I make costumes and props in my spare time. I also draw, paint, sculpt, work with metal, design Dungeons and Dragons games for my friends and I'm also learning all about music from my good pal Kevin.

When I earn enough money, I plan on traveling to Europe to look at all the historical art and maybe settle down in a nice place like Norway. But until then I'm always looking for more ways to express my creativity and imagination.

Jay Wilson - Director Pandora’s Sox

When Jay isn’t performing (Jay is a member of the Canadian Actors Equity Association) or raising funds for live professional theatre (Jay has worked in marketing and development for, The National Tap Dance Co of Canada The Gravenhurst Opera House and Theatre Collingwood) or establishing training programs in drama for children (Jay founded ShowbizKidz and Act-Up! in Gravenhurst and Collingwood respectively), Jay spends his time uncovering delightful creative treasures like this project – Pandora’s Sox.

Jay was introduced to the world of puppetry in 1979 having just graduated from the University of Waterloo in drama and theatre arts. He joined a children’s theatre company that relied heavily on puppetry. Jay has been fascinated by puppets ever since and now he is “in his element” as he shares his puppet knowledge and writes and performs his unique puppet shows.

Established in the winter of 2009, Pandora’s Sox has blossomed quickly. Pandora’s Sox conducts puppet workshops, assembles and distributes sock-puppet kits, and performs puppet shows wherever kids gather. McGregor Socks has joined Pandora’s Sox in the quest to put puppetry into the hands of aspiring puppeteers. In addition, Pandora’s Sox creates employment opportunities for people with disabilities in Simcoe County.

Working for the clampdown

The Pandora's Sox puppet factory is runing full tilt. Pictured here is one of our employees assembling the sock puppet kits. Apparently fueled by Tim Horton's.

Boxes of sock puppet kits, socks, fake noses, googly eyes and other materials are making there way into the office of The Career Connection. Not sure this is doing much to maintain the air of professionalism around the office.

Now full size puppets are being invited to hang out with the Pandora's Sox gang in the board room, making the other tenants a little uneasy to say the least.

We are right on schedule with regard to the launching of "Pandora's Box" the puppet show. The famous Greek myth has been transformed into an entertaining and engaging play featuring a cast of original hand-made puppets.

Pandora's Box is a one-person show that features 5 characters struggling with this curious box. Perfect for small audiences ages 5-12 this engaging story uses original music and bizarre puppets to tell the story.

Pictured here is what comes out of the box. This mechanical puppet is ready now for a paint job and dressing.

This "Fury" is the work of Jason Langdon a puppet and props builder from Orillia Ontario. The eyebrows and mouth are controlled by mechanics wired onto a glove up inside the head of the puppet. Oh Oh...In the puppet play, "Pandora's Box" eventually something comes out of the box; something scary.
Jason Langdon is an artist who works in many mediums (including puppets) Jason is currently working on the character that comes out of the box. Here are some sketches he has done as he designs this exceptional puppet. Stay tuned for more details as they unfold. Pandora's Sox will launch its party entertainment performance in May of 2010

WELCOME TO PANDORA'S SOX

Pandora's Sox is an instructional entertainment company that features puppets and creative drama. Unlike other puppet companies, Pandora’s Sox is not only for children. Pandora’s Sox often brings the world of creative play to adults.

Inspiration comes from the great stories in Greek mythology.

Puppet Workshops.
We focus primarily on sock puppets and workshop topics cover everything from construction to manipulation, characterization and voice work for puppets. While sock puppets are simple to make they offer lots of opportunities for diverse characters and creative possibilities. In the hands of a skilled puppeteer, sock puppets become an art-form unto itself. High-school drama students and professional working actors greatly benefit from puppet instruction. Puppets are also physically demanding, offering quite a workout, particularly if mask-work is incorporated. For adults and seniors the puppets sometimes take on a therapeutic role. Jay Wilson, Company Director, has conducted workshops at libraries, public schools, seniors homes, high schools, municipal activity programs, YMCAs, private schools, Scout and Guide groups to name a few.

Staff Training - Puppetry.
Pandora's Sox can't be everywhere at once but that doesn't mean your community has to miss out. Pandora's Sox will happily train your staff on how to conduct effective puppet workshops and performances. We're delighted to share our expertise. Camp staff, library staff, and parks and recreation program staff have enjoyed Pandora’s Sox puppet training.

Party Entertainment For Children.
"NEW" Designed for an audience size of 20 or less, this completely original puppet performance makes for a great birthday or seasonal event. Ideal for ages 5-12, this 30 minute program guarantees an engaging, stimulating and fun time. The performance is followed by a "how did you do that?" session. Add a build-your-own puppet loot bag as a great take-home piece. Currently the show "Pandora's Box" is touring children's parties. This delightful show brings to life this famous Greek myth about Pandora and her mysterious box. What's in the box? How did it get here? What will happen if it opens? Pandora's Sox has conducted workshops for kids, teens, adults and yes, seniors. These workshops focus on acting for live theatre. Instruction covers characterization, script interpretation, voice training, and improvisation.

The legend begins...

Below are the words to the now famous song "Pandora's Box". This song begins the show by asking the audience "should we open the box?"

Be sure to hold on to your sox, when you peek in the lid of Pandora's box
And be sure to hold on to you hat when Pandora says 'let's open that!'

Pandora lived in ancient times with pleasant songs and silly rhymes

But one thing that she often did. See a box, lift the lid

So if you peek in a box or open a book, see whats inside just have a look
